Sikkim Gangtok :

Gangtok is a municipality, the capital, the largest town of the Indian state of Sikkim and the headquarters of the East Sikkim district. It is located at an elevation of 5,410 ft and with town's population of 2,00,000 belongs to different ethnicities such as Nepali, Lepchas and Bhutia. It is a unique hill resort of northeast India and undoubtedly one of the oft-visited ones.

The town is famous for its scenic beauty and spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga, their highest mountain in the world. The town offers a mild temperate climate with a temperature of around 23 degree centigrade in summer and around 6 degree centigrade during winter. Gangtok rose to prominence as a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site after the construction of the Rumtek, Ranka & Enchey Monastery. Gangtok is a centre of Tibetan Buddhist culture and learning, with the presence of several monasteries, religious educational institutions, and centres for Tibetology.

Rumtek Monastery sikkim

1. Rumtek Monastery : also called the Dharmachakra Centre, is a gompa located in the Indian state of Sikkim near the capital Gangtok. It is a focal point for the sectarian tensions within the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism that characterize the Karmapa controversy. Originally built under the direction of Changchub Dorje, 12th Karmapa Lama in the mid-1700s.

2. Ban Jhakri water falls : This 100-foot waterfall is located in a landscaped park with about 7kms from Gangtok town & close to Ranka Monastery. There are paved pathways and footbridge around the park which spreads across some 2-acres with many trees and flowering plants in it. It's a popular picnic spot. There is also a manmade lake here with a dragon at the center.

Ganesh Tok Gangtok

3. Ganesh Tok : A small Ganesh temple just next to the television tower on the hill is popularly known as Ganesh Tok. It is just 7 km from the heart of the Gangtok city at an altitude of 6,500mt. You will need to climb a stair case to reach to the upper levels where the temple and viewing area are located. Mid-away along the staircase you will be required to take off your shoes.

4. Hanuman Tok : This is a view point in Gangtok. The view of the city is very beautiful from here. A small Ganesh temple just next to the television tower on the hill is popularly known as Ganesh Tok. About 11 km from the Gangtok city is Hanuman Tok, dedicated to Lord Hanuman is situated. In the vicinity is the royal cremation ground of Lukshyama. The last rites of the Namgyal dynasty royal family members were done here.

5. Tashi Viewpoint : It's located in Tashi and about 8kms from the Gangtok town. It offers a sweeping view of Kanchenjunga snow peaks on a clear day. In fact the view of sunrise from here is unforgettable, you will see the peaks dazzling with changing colors. But for that you must reach the point before 5am. In the opposite mountains, you can see the Phodong and Labrang monasteries.

6. Ropeway Gangtok : If you are at Gangtok you must visit ropeways or cable car located at Deorali market. This rope way of about 1 km long has three entry points or stops. The lowest point is at Deorali market and the highest point is at Tashiling (below the state secretariat). There is a mid point stop at Nam-Nang. One can enter from any point and return to same point after touching other two points.

RHandicrafts and Handlooms Gangtok

7. Handicrafts & Handlooms : this center was instituted with the objective of promoting and preserving the rich arts and crafts of Sikkim. The Directorate is a veritable storehouse of traditional Handicrafts as well as a host of other Souvenirs & Gift items. It began its history in the year 1957 when it was established as a Technical Institute for Training and Production of traditional arts and crafts.

8. Himalayan Zoological Park : The Sikkim Himalayan Zoological Park (SHZP) in Gangtok has embarked on a breeding and conservation programme. Red Pandas are much smaller than the giant panda. The state animal of Sikkim, the Red Pandas are found in six protected areas of the State. But they are facing extinction due to habitat loss caused by construction activity and over grazing.

9. Enchey Monastery : The Enchey Monastery was established in 1909 above Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim in the Northeastern Indian state. It belongs to the Nyingma order of Vajrayana Buddhism. The monastery built around the then small hamlet of Gangtok became a religious centre. The location was blessed by Lama Drupthob Karpo, a renowned exponent of tantric (adept) art in Buddhism with flying powers.

10. Namgyal Institute of Tibetology : It is a Tibet museum in Gangtok. The foundation stone of the institute was laid by the 14th Dalai Lama on the 10th of February 1957 and it was opened officially by the Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 1 October 1958. The institute employs researchers and one of its new research programs is a project which seeks to document the social history of Sikkim's.

11. M. G. Marg, Gangtok : is one of the main shopping and cultural activity streets in Gangtok. M.G Road is a fascinating place to spend a few nights, the winding side alleys hide some unexpected gems, the pedestrianized and a pleasant place to take a stroll. The road and the area around has transformed over the years. It is now more like a long stretch of open mall where locals and tourists take leisure stroll .

Drodul Chorten Stupa Gangtok

12. Dro-dul Chorten : is a stupa in Gangtok, Sikkim. The stupa was built by Trulshik Rinpoche, head of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism in 1945. Inside this stupa, a complete set of Dorjee Phurba, Kangyur relics (Holy Books) and other religious objects. Around the stupa are 108 Mani Lhakor or prayer wheels. The stupa is surrounded by Chorten Lakahang and Guru Lakhang, where two statues of Guru Rinpoche are present.

13. Bakthang Water Falls : 20 minutes drive from Gangtok is Bakthang Water Falls. It originates from Ratey Chu, the main water source of Gangtok area. The location is completely free from the pollution of city life and is a nice place for travelers who avoid rush. Apart from the clear view of the peaks surrounding Mount Khangchendzonga, some portions of Gangtok town, one also gets a bird's eye view of the region

14. Flower Show, Gangtok : tourist generally hang around this park more than the time planned and many returns here if there is time. This Flower exhibition is organized round the year at the Flower Show venue near the White Memorial Hall complex. It is ion central Gangtok and makes a pleasurable walk from M G Road. Orchid show held during the spring season is one of the most popular shows organized.

Ranka Monastery Gangtok

15. Ranka Monastery : This monastery is also known as the Lingdum Monastery. This is a fairly peaceful place and hence one can spend more time photographing or simply going around the place. There is a long line of prayer wheels just near the entrance. It is customery spinning these prayer wheels. Before the Tibetian New Year one can find the young Buddhist monks practising the Lama dance.

Getting There

Airpot : Bagdogra (130 kms from capital Gangtok) is the major airport of the region. Regular flights connects Bagdogra to major airports in the country.
Rail Station : NJP (New Jalpaiguri) 125 kms from capital Gangtok is the major Rail Station.
Road : Siliguri 115 km from capital Gangtok is the main junction and the largest town nearby the state.
Entry points : There are two Major entry points for Sikkim.
Rangpo : Tourists visiting East and North districts including capital Gangtok, enter into Sikkim through Rangpo.
Melli : is the entry point for West and South districts.


Permit and Entry Rules


Indian : Indian tourists visiting sikkim do not require any permit to enter the state. However they require special permit created by Travel Agents in Sikkim, Goverment Authority to visit some of the 'Restricted Area' inlcuding Nathula Pass - Tsongo Lake & Baba Mandir – Zuluk – Memenchu area in East, entire North district (Lachung, Lachen, Yumthang valley, Gurudongmar Lake, Dzongu), Dzongri – Goechala area in West district etc.

Foreigner : Foreigners visiting sikkim are provided with only 15 days permit to visit Sikkim which can be extended for a further period of 30 days in two spells of 15 days each. This permit can be easily be obtained through the check post at Rangpho and Melli free of cost. This permits can also be obtained from Indian Embassy at different places. International travellers need to carry original and copies of photograph and passport.

Restricted Area for Foreigners : Foreigners are strictly not allowed to visit Nathula Pass, Baba Mandir, Zuluk, Gurudongmar lake etc.

Best time to Visit Sikkim

Best time to visit sikkim is during the months of March, April, May, June, October, Nov. Most of the roads remains closed during the month of July, August due to heavy rainfall and landslides. Also some of the tourists don't prefer to visit Sikkim in the months of December, January and Febrary due to cold climates.
